v1 In the 14th year of Hezekiah, Sennacherib, who was king of Assyria, came up against the “fortified cities” of Judah and took them.
v6 Look! You are trusting in the staff of this broken reed, Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So, is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
The Rabshakeh (governor) for Assyria throws accusation after accusation against Hezekiah and the people. He even speaks to them in their native Hebrew, even after Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said not to.
He tells them not to rely on Hezekiah’s claim that the Lord of Israel will protect them. He says that Hezekiah is deceiving them. We often see that today that the accuser comes out against the leaders of our organizations or even country telling us not to trust in the Lord.
He goes on to tell them that it is best to make peace with Assyria. All the other gods failed to save the other lands.
v19 Hamath and Arpad and Shepharvaim and even Samaria. Where are their gods?
v21 “But they held their peace and answered him not a word”
This is remeniscient of what took place of the trial of Jesus and the crucifixion. There were many accusations thrown out at Him. They mocked him and told him that if He were truly the Son of God to bring Himself down from the cross. And, Jesus said not a word in His defense.
When false claims come against us or our God, there is no reason for us to defend, even when the odds are stacked so highly against us.
