Saul Forgets who David is…why?

David gets anointed.

The Spirit of God falls on David.

At the same time, the Spirit of God departs from Saul, and an evil spirit comes in its place.

Saul is tormented. David is chosen to soothe Saul with his harp playing.

Then, we have David and Goliath, and Saul does not remember whose son David is, even after Saul sends word to Jesse asking for David to be with him since he has found such favor. David has an exchange with Saul saying how he killed the lion and the bear. Saul lets him go, and then he asks who the kid is. Very odd…

When we lose favor with the LORD, it is quite easy to forget whose son we are. But, there is much more here.

1 Samuel 16

David Anointed

12So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with (Q)beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance And the LORD said, “(R)Arise, anoint him; for this is he.”

13Then Samuel took the horn of oil and (S)anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and (T)the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

14(U)Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and (V)an evil spirit from the LORD terrorized him.

15Saul’s servants then said to him, “Behold now, an evil spirit from God is terrorizing you.

16“Let our lord now command your servants who are before you. Let them seek a man who is a skillful player on the harp; and it shall come about when the evil spirit from God is on you, that (W)he shall play the harp with his hand, and you will be well.”

17So Saul said to his servants, “Provide for me now a man who can play well and bring him to me.”

18Then one of the young men said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is a skillful musician, (X)a mighty man of valor, a warrior, one prudent in speech, and a handsome man; and (Y)the LORD is with him.”

19So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David who is with the flock.”

20Jesse (Z)took a donkey loaded with bread and a jug of wine and a young goat, and sent them to Saul by David his son.

21Then David came to Saul and (AA)attended him; and Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor bearer.

22Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David now stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”

23So it came about whenever (AB)the evil spirit from God came to Saul, David would take the harp and play it with his hand; and Saul would be refreshed and be well, and the evil spirit would depart from him.

1 Samuel 17:31-35

David Kills Goliath

31When the words which David spoke were heard, they told them to Saul, and he sent for him.

32David said to Saul, “(AI)Let no man’s heart fail on account of him; (AJ)your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

33Then Saul said to David, “(AK)You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth while he has been a warrior from his youth.”

34But David said to Saul, “Your servant was tending his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock,

35I went out after him and attacked him, and (AL)rescued it from his mouth; and when he rose up against me, I seized him by his beard and struck him and killed him.

36“Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has taunted the armies of the living God.”

37And David said, “(AM)The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine ” And Saul said to David, “(AN)Go, and may the LORD be with you.”

1 Samuel 17:55-58

55Now when Saul saw David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is (BE)this young man?” And Abner said, “By your life, O king, I do not know.”

56The king said, “You inquire whose son the youth is.”

57So when David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and (BF)brought him before Saul with the Philistine’s head in his hand.

58Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “(BG)I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”
