We are going to have a woman President

Ok, so this is more like rumor stuff than anything I know to be true. I put that disclaimer out first.

But, I can see this as really exciting. I also see McCain dying in office and this lady becoming the first woman president and how amazing it would be if she were on fire.

These are random thoughts only…

Is Sarah Palin the first Pentecostal to make it onto a major political ticket?

Start with the question of whether she’s Pentecostal. Here’s what I found earlier today:

This is from this summer’s Alaska Assemblies of God newsletter:

Superintendent Ted Boatsman, who was Palin’s junior high pastor at Wasilla Assembly of God, along with Pastor Mike Rose of Juneau Christian Center, where Palin presently attends church when in Juneau, laid hands on the Governor and led the Council in prayer.

The Assemblies of God is one of the larger Pentecostal denominations in the US.

OTOH, I’ve found other references to her as attending a non-denominational Christian church in Wasilla. And there’s this, from Rev. Rob Schenck:

In his conversation with Gov. Palin and her husband, Todd, he asked about their church life. They told him they were active members of an independent Bible church.

And the Wall Street Journal says, hmm, that she’s Lutheran? Which is possible, I suppose, but seems unlikely given the other evidence.

Then there’s the question of Pentecostals of any kind making it onto a major ticket. I pinged Mel Robeck, professor of church history at Fuller Theological Seminary and author of the book The Azusa Street Mission and Revival, the story of the birth of modern Pentecostalism. His take:

I have never, ever heard of a Pentecostal being considered for a position as high as this. We have had Watt as Secretary of the Interior and Ashcroft as Attorney General, and a few members in Congress, but I didn’t believe that I would live to see the day when a Pentecostal would be announced as a VP nominee.

Surely her specific current affiliation will be cleared up by the end of the day, wot? And whether she’s a member of a Pentecostal church at the moment (and maybe the non-denominational church is “spirit-filled” in practice?), she’d still be the first member of a ticket with Pentecostalism in her background…

We know she is an Alaskan reformer. We know she is pro-life. We know she was a beauty queen and basketball star. We know she eats moose burgers. But does Sarah Palin speak in tongues?

According to some reports, Palin attends church at the Juneau Christian Center, a congregation affiliated with the Assembly of God. As many of you know, the Assembly of God is the largest pentecostal denomination in the world. It is known for speaking in tongues, healing, and an emotional and contemporary style of worship with a lot of hand-raising.

Palin appears to have grown up pentecostal or at least attended a local Assembly of God Church (Wasilla Assembly of God Church) during her junior high school years.

NOTE: In an interview with Time Magazine, Palin said she was born and baptized Catholic but now attends a “non-denominational Bible Church.” (I am sure this will all be cleared up shortly).

If Palin is indeed a pentecostal, I am sure the pundits will compare her to two other noteworthy members of the Assembly of God who were also involved in Republican politics: Bush’s Attorney General, John Ashcroft and Reagan’s Secretary of the Interior, James Watt.
